Long-Established Liverpool Firm Algeos Invests in Liverpool 3D Printing and Digital Healthcare Jobs

Algeos, a cornerstone of Liverpool’s healthcare manufacturing sector for over a century, is undergoing a major digital transformation that is creating new local jobs and bringing advanced 3D printing technology to the city.

Specialising in podiatry, physiotherapy, and prosthetics, the Liverpool-based business currently employs 72 people and is a key supplier to the NHS.

By investing in advanced manufacturing, the firm is future-proofing its operations to meet the evolving demands of both public and private healthcare markets.

Max Sheridan, Managing Director of Algeos, said: “We’re proud to be growing and innovating here in Liverpool, and to continue contributing to the city’s healthcare manufacturing sector.”

Reflecting on the company’s evolution under a new leadership team, he added: “With a new leadership team in place, it felt like the right time to step back, question how we do things and think about where we want to be in five years’ time.”

To support this growth, Algeos accessed specialist expertise through Liverpool City Council’s Business Support Service, funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.

Working with strategic consultants, the team developed a roadmap focused on automation and high-tech manufacturing, ensuring that their deep roots in Liverpool continue to support modern clinical needs.

Advanced 3D Printing and Manufacturing Success in Liverpool

The most significant shift for the business is the launch of its first custom-manufactured medical devices using 3D printing, produced right here in Liverpool.

This move into advanced manufacturing is not only speeding up the delivery of bespoke orthotics but is also actively creating jobs in the city region.

Algeos is using this innovation to attract fresh talent, bringing in apprentices through partnerships with the King’s Trust to complement their long-standing, experienced workforce.

“Mark [the consultant] came in and looked at all of our capabilities and what we do; our assets; prioritising strategic objectives,” Max Sheridan explains.

“We came away with an action plan to focus on the customer experience, automation and digital transformation.

“Our team is still the same number of people, but we utilise them in terms of account management and business development now, instead.”

This investment in people and technology has allowed Algeos to expand into additional premises in the city, operating more efficiently than ever before.

Strengthening the City Economy Through Healthcare Innovation

The impact of Algeos’ growth is being felt across the wider Liverpool City Region.

By automating its digital estate and integrating back-office systems, the company has cleared the path for a five-year “Go North” strategic roadmap that takes them to 2030.

This strategy ensures the business remains a vital part of the local economy while expanding its presence in private practice and hospital markets across the UK.

Councillor Nick Small, Liverpool City Council’s Cabinet Member for Growth and Economy, noted the importance of the firm’s local impact.

He said: “Algeos is a great example of how long‑established Liverpool businesses are embracing innovation to grow sustainably, create jobs and strengthen the city’s economy.

“By investing in digital transformation and advanced manufacturing, the company is not only future‑proofing its own operations but also supporting the NHS and healthcare sector more widely.

“We’re proud to support businesses like Algeos through our Business Support Service and to see that investment delivering real impact here in Liverpool.”
