Work begins on £4m Walton Breck Road improvement scheme
Work has begun on the third phase of a major £4 million improvement programme for Walton Breck Road and the surrounding area in Liverpool.
The latest phase is being delivered by Eric Wright on behalf of Liverpool City Council and will see a series of upgrades introduced to improve safety, accessibility and the overall environment for residents, businesses and visitors.
The final design of the scheme has been shaped by feedback from the local community following a series of consultation events.
Residents’ views have directly influenced elements of the project including junction layouts and the locations of pedestrian crossings.
Improvements will include resurfacing roads and footpaths, upgrading pedestrian crossings and enhancing bus stop facilities throughout the area.
Back Rockfield Road will also be fully pedestrianised as part of the scheme, creating a safer environment for people walking through the neighbourhood.
Initial site surveys and preparatory work are now underway, ahead of temporary road and lane closures beginning from Monday, August 10.
The closures will be introduced in phases in an effort to minimise disruption to residents, businesses and motorists while the work is carried out.
Some restrictions are expected to remain in place throughout the project, which is scheduled for completion in March 2027.
Almost £4 million is being invested in the latest improvements, which form part of ongoing work to enhance Walton Breck Road and the surrounding area.
The planned closures and restrictions will be:
Walton Breck Road one-way closure (during the day time), with travel permitted heading from Kemp Avenue to Robson Street
- from Kemp Avenue to Robson Street: Monday 10 August 2026 to Thursday 11 March 2027
Walton Breck Road full road closure (during the day time)
- from Robson Street to Kemp Avenue: Thursday 11 March 2027 to Tuesday 30 March 2027 to complete carriageway resurfacing work.
Side road closures
- Back Rockfield Road: Monday 10 August to Monday 28 September
- Gilman Street: Wednesday 16 September to Wednesday 11 November
- Pulford Street: Wednesday 4 November to Thursday 28 January
This third phase follows earlier works carried out by Dowhigh and Cadent to undertake highways and gas network maintenance along the route.
